For years, test-takers could achieve high scores by delivering fluent, pre-memorized templates. Pearson is directly addressing this by introducing a “Hybrid Scoring Model”.
Now, seven key tasks—including Describe Image, Retell Lecture, and Write Essay—will be reviewed by both advanced AI and human experts. These experts can easily distinguish between a generic script and a thoughtful, relevant response. The scoring weight for Content has also been significantly increased for these tasks. This means what you say is just as critical as how you say it.
Key Changes at a Glance:
- Two New Speaking Tasks: Get ready for “Respond to a Situation,” where you’ll provide a spoken response to a real-life scenario, and “Summarize a Group Discussion,” where you’ll listen to a multi-speaker conversation and summarize it. These tasks directly test your practical, conversational skills.
- The End of Templates: With human review for essays and speaking tasks, using a generic template is now extremely risky and likely to be penalized. You must address the specific prompt you are given.
- Longer Test: The overall test duration has been extended by about 15 minutes to approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, with the total number of questions increasing to around 65-75.
